How to Spot Carer Burnout Early and What to Do About It

Every November, the Royal College of Occupational Therapists (RCOT) celebrates Occupational Therapy Week (OT Week) — a national campaign highlighting the life-changing impact of occupational therapy.

This year’s theme, “Right Support, Right Time: Unlocking the Power of OT,” focuses on Prevention — showcasing how OTs help people stay well for longer by getting the right help when they need it most.

Why This Campaign Means So Much to Me

The message of prevention reflects what occupational therapists do every day — helping people maintain independence, well-being, and quality of life.

As part of my resources pack for family carers, I created a guide called:
📘 “Who to Ask for Help.”

In celebration of OT Week, I’m sharing it for free.
It’s designed to help carers find the right people and services to contact when supporting a loved one at home.

This resource is grounded in both my professional and personal experience — as an:

  • Occupational Therapist (with work experience in NHS, Adult Social Care, and Private Sector),
  • Moving and Handling Trainer,
  • Former professional carer, and
  • Daughter who cared for her mother during her cancer journey.

Why I Created “Who to Ask for Help”

Caring for someone is deeply meaningful, but it can also feel overwhelming.
Knowing who to ask for help can make everything a little easier.

This guide brings together practical information to help you:

  • find the right support at the right time,
  • understand who to contact and what help is available, and
  • feel more confident and supported in your caring role.
